DE-CIX Madrid is exceeding the company’s initial expectations for growth, leading to the opening of a second enabled site.
“We anticipated a strong demand from international content networks, Internet service providers in Spain and Portugal, as well as from West African ISPs reaching Madrid via Lisbon, but the actual interest in our exchange exceeded even our most optimistic forecast,” notes Harald A. Summa, DE-CIX CEO.
He continues, “After one month in service, we already have about 50 customers signed to our IX. Clearly, there is tremendous need for an Internet exchange that provides a neutral, reliable, quality interconnection and peering point.”
DE-CIX Madrid started operations in May 2016 at the carrier-neutral Interxion data center in Madrid, which offers a high density of carriers and ISPs. Most recently, DE-CIX signed an agreement with Interoute Spain, whereby DE-CIX will open a second DE-CIX Madrid enabled site at Interoute’s data center in Madrid.
Strategically located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid has long been the center of an extensive telecommunications network and a vital juncture for many networks and cable systems. Yet, while Spain has one of the largest mobile markets in Europe and a burgeoning market for video streaming, its interconnection platforms have lagged behind. The benefit of a carrier and data-center-neutral Internet exchange lays in its reach to all major data centers facilities in a metro market.
