Germany is the second largest market for domain names in the world. At WHD.global we want to shed some light on three hot topics of the domain industry: Universal Acceptance, brandTLDs and geoTLDs. For each of these topics, the eco Association is bringing you top-class panels to give you the latest insights from the market.

Agenda

Thursday, 17 March 2016
10:00 Panel Discussion:
Building Towards Tomorrow’s Internet:
Fixing IDNs, EAI & Universal Acceptance (45 Min.)

The support of internationalized domain names and email address internationalization brings the Internet a huge step closer to fulfilling its promise of facilitating the sharing of knowledge globally and promising connectivity to the next billion new Internet users. For those in under-served regions, such capabilities would remove yet another barrier in information access by enabling communication in native languages.

But that promise of inclusiveness and diversity is only partially fulfilled. Currently, treatment of internationalized domain names and email addresses is inconsistent across systems, including rejection. This is part of a class of issues commonly referred to as “Universal Acceptance.” This panel discussion will bring attention to the lack of Universal Acceptance, discuss necessary systemic changes, and facilitate stakeholder collaboration to develop meaningful solutions.

brandTLDs – The Great Unkowns (45 Min.)

With ICANN‘s new gTLD program, a new species of Top-Level Domains was created: the so-called .brands, or Brand TLDs, like .symantec, .bmw and .barclaycard. In the meantime, many other companies have registered their brands as Top-Level Domains, but so far only a few of them have made it into the public sphere.

When will we see the big step towards the end? Which applications and business models will become associated with the Brand TLDs? These and further questions will be discussed with industry experts who are advising and accompanying the big brands along the path to the Rootzone.
