Industry round table discussion on EU priorities for data centre operators

The industry-only discussion on 15 June 2016 for data centre operators and their representative bodies to review progress on issues that we are addressing at EU level.

techUK has been working informally with a number of data centre specific organisations and broad based digital technology associations so that we can cooperate on issues of mutual concern. We surveyed our members some time ago on things that concerned them at EU level.

Issues including data protection, energy taxation and energy policy and skills were raised. The majority are already being dealt with effectively but EU ETS (for larger operators) and the likely escalation of non-commodity energy costs are starting to keep European operators awake at night. These topics will be on our agenda.

We will also discuss the best way to address the disconnect within the policy agenda between initiatives like the Digital Agenda and an apparent inability to connect these with consequent growth in digital data.
