eco Board Member Oliver Süme on the ECJ Judgment on Website Blocking

“Web-blocks pose a profound encroachment into the protection of both communication and the confidentiality of correspondence. At the same time, they have been proven to be of limited effectiveness. As a result, we maintain on principle the position that web-blocks are the wrong approach,” said Oliver Süme, eco Director of Policy and Law.

“Unfortunately, the ECJ did not take the aspect of the protection of either communication in the Internet or the confidentiality of correspondence into sufficient account in its decision. What impact this ECJ judgment will have on the German legal situation is yet to be seen, and will require a detailed analysis of the judgment. However, we do not see the danger that the ECJ has smoothed the way with its judgment for the so-called Internet-block,” said Süme.
